Psoriasis Diet

Psoriasis diet refers to the food items that are prescribed to the people suffering from Psoriasis disease, a skin disease symptomized by itchy, thick, red patchy and flaky skin. People of any age-group may be affected with this skin disorder, but more chances are with the people between 15-35 years of age. Though the causal factors of psoriasis are many, the diet has a tremendous effect on overall condition.

The diet manipulation to suit the purpose is quite beneficial in the effective ongoing treatment for the skin disease.A gluten-free diet is found to be singificantly effective. Although there are very less evidences for proving this, some studies and research have indicated the improvement in skin disease by following a diet without glutinous food.

Psoriasis Diet: Characteristics

The diet should be gluten-free due to the reason that gluten is a storage of proteinaceous or starchy compounds that contain a component called ‘gliadin’, which may result in ‘celiac disease’ that is a common digestive problem. The people suffering from ‘celiac disease’ often get gastrointestinal problems while eating glutinous foods that result in pustular skin disease. This disease may be psoriasis or dermatitis.

Various studies have proven this fact that glutinous food is related to psoriasis disease, hence dermatologists and dieticians recommend gluten-free diet for the psoriasis patients. The diet is also designed with a thought to provide anti-inflammatory properties to the patient’s body. Fish oil, fresh fruits, green vegetables and olive oil are some of the essential components of the diet followed by the psoriasis patients.

Psoriasis: Dietary Restrictions

Psoriasis can be adversely affected if a proper diet is not followed; hence here are the few items that should be avoided if suffering from the disease:

  • Red meat should be strictly avoided as it may trigger the condition.
  • Refined carbohydrates such as breads made of rye, wheat and barley should not be included in the diet as it may worsen the psoriasis.
  • Processed foods and liquids are prohibited in psoriasis diet.
  • Acidic foods and food items containing vitamin C should be highly avoided.

Psoriasis Diet Plan

There is no single diet plan that may fit for all psoriasis patients.Each and every patient has his/her own immune system conditions and it depends on person-to-person on how the diet affects the system. According to experts the common foods that should be included in the diet plan are as follows:


  • Fat-free yoghurt, goat cheese
  • Flax seeds, nuts, raisins
  • Fresh fruits
  • Cereals like quinoa excluding glutinous cereals and breads
  • Almond milk or cinnamon milk

At least 250 calories should be consumed in breakfast.

Midmorning Snacks:

  • Raisins
  • Banana, apple, cherries or grapes
  • Applesauce

For midmorning snacks 60 calories are required.


  • Avocado slices
  • Corn tacos
  • Refried beans
  • Grilled chicken
  • Rice pasta
  • Steamed vegetables
  • Non-fat yoghurt
  • Gluten-free bread
  • Fresh fruit and vegetable salad

At least 450 calories are necessary for lunch.

Midafternoon Snacks:

  • Raw vegetables
  • Brazil nuts
  • Hummus
  • Celery sticks
  • Peanut butter

125 calories should essentially be added for midafternoon snacks.


  • Giant salad bowl consisting green leafy vegetables, grapes, sunflower seeds and nuts dressed with olive oil and lemon juice.
  • Cheese, prunes and vinegar may be added to salad bowl.
  • Baked tilapia
  • Fresh yoghurt

Dinner should include 450 calories.
