Modified Atkins Diet

Modified Atkins Diet is a weight loss approach that has been specially formulated for those people who have not been able to stick to the atkin's diet. This Diet makes certain changes in the original Atkins Diet Regimen. It is majorly used as a part of the diet plan for children and adults suffering from epilepsy and seizures.

There are four basic steps to the modified atkin's diet.

  1. Induction phase - Only 20g carbohydrates are allowed in this phase. Meats, cheese and vegetables are allowed in this part. No hydrogenated fat is allowed. Olive oil can be consumed.
  2. On going weight loss - 5g carbohydrate is increased each day. Nuts, berries and yogurt are added to the diet.
  3. Pre-maintenance - More carbohydrates are added to the diet. Fruits and legumes can be started.
  4. Lifetime maintenance - Finally cereal and grains are added to the diet. It helps to gain control over eating habits and binging of food.

The major difference between Atkins diet and Modified Atkins Diet is that it is less restrictive and allows consuming liberally till the person is satisfied. It gradually increases the carbohydrates and is not considered as a starvation diet.

Guidelines for Modified Atkins Diet

  • The major change in the Modified Atkins Diet [MAD] is reducing the high levels of fat intake and replacing the same with more of complex carbohydrates. These complex carbohydrates are chiefly obtained from plant sources such as leafy green vegetables, and other vegetables so as to not disturb the subtle balance between excess and appropriate calorie intake.
  • A simple step like increasing the intake of greens from 3 cups to 4 cups per day wouldn’t make a substantial increase in the calorie consumption but at the same time would serve to keep the stomach more full and provide the feeling of satisfaction when a small portion of meat and some vegetables alone seem insufficient.

Benefits of MAD

  1. Since this is a slightly relaxed version of the original Atkins Diet, it may not show dramatic weight loss as seen with the original diet. Although rate of weight loss may be diminished, it will surely occur owing to the dietary changes undertaken. The solution lies in maintaining total intake as low in carbohydrate as possible.

  1. Recent studies have reported that the MAD program has even proved beneficial for epileptic patients by reducing the degree, incidence and episodes of seizures. However the modifications on this diet required higher fat consumption, and a strict vigilance on carbohydrate intake and the proportion of various foods ingested. Such a diet has been propagated by the John Hopkins Institute as it demonstrated marked improvement in epileptic children with the frequency of seizures reduced to half.
