Angina Diet

Patients suffering from angina are recommended an angina diet that will improve and prolong their overall quality of life. Angina is a medical condition where there is an imbalance between the demand of oxygen to the heart and the supply that is provided. Heart muscles require more oxygen which cannot be supplied by the coronary arteries as they are blocked by cholesterol deposits.

Characteristics of the Angina Diet

An angina diet will help reduce the bad cholesterol or LDL in blood by increasing the levels of good cholesterol or HDL in blood. HDL can actually scour vessel walls and drag LDL to the liver for excretion. However, just an angina diet is not sufficient to control angina and its symptoms. Medications, lifestyles changes, exercising and dietary changes all work together to help the patient deal with angina.

General Guidelines for Patients on the Angina Diet

  • Lifestyle changes like reduced stress, increased exercise routines are advised. However, for angina patients, a very carefully calibrated exercise routine is required.
  • Patients should increase their intake of fresh fruits and vegetables and decrease their intake of unsaturated fats found in meats
  • An increased intake of monosaturated fats present in vegetable oil, fish etc is advised.
  • It is recommended that patients stop smoking and stop their alcohol intake completely. This is because smoking causes vasoconstriction that can further decrease the blood supply to the heart. Alcohol can raise blood pressure and affect the heart too.

Important Note

Angina is a very serious medical condition. A tailored angina diet has to be combined with stress relief, exercise and lifestyle changes to have the best effects on the patient.
