|Firmly packed brown sugar||1 Cup (16 tbs)|

Melt shortening in saucepan.
Add cereal and cook about 1 minute.
Add sugar and mix well.
Stir in egg and vanilla.
Sift flour once, measure, add baking powder, soda, salt, and sift again.
Add flour mixture to cereal mixture, a small amount at a time, mixing well after each addition.
With last addition of flour, blend in 3/4 cup Baker's Coconut, cut into fine pieces.

With last addition of flour, stir in 1/2 cup cut dates.
Spread into a greased 8x8x2-inch pan and bake in moderate oven (350Â°F) about 25 minutes.
Cut into bars.
