Date Squares

Ingredients
  Butter/Margarine 1 Cup (16 tbs)
  Firmly packed brown sugar 1 Cup (16 tbs)
  Sifted all purpose flour 1 3⁄4 Cup (28 tbs)
  Salt 1 Teaspoon
  Baking soda 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Rolled oats 1 1⁄2 Cup (24 tbs)
  Egg 1 , beaten
  Date filling 1 Cup (16 tbs) (1 recipe)
Directions

Cream shortening and sugar well.
Sift flour, salt and baking soda together, and stir in.
Mix in rolled oats and egg.
Place 1/2 mixture in greased 13" x 9" cake pan or 2 8-inch square pans, and pat down firmly.
Spread with filling.
Cover with remaining crumb mixture, and pat lightly.
Bake at 350°F. 35 minutes or until lightly browned.
Cool, cut in squares and remove from pan.
Makes 2 1/2 dozen medium bars or 4 dozen smaller ones.
