|Cut up dates||1 1⁄2 Cup (24 tbs)|
|Granulated sugar||2 Tablespoon|
|Water||3⁄4 Cup (12 tbs)|
|Unsweetened chocolate square||1⁄2|
|Shortening||1⁄3 Cup (5.33 tbs) (Part Butter Or Margarine)|
|Brown sugar||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)|
|Gold medal flour||3⁄4 Cup (12 tbs)|
|Rolled oats||3⁄4 Cup (12 tbs)|
|Chopped nuts||1⁄3 Cup (5.33 tbs)|
Heat oven to 400°
Grease a square pan, 8x8x2".
Cook dates, sugar, water, and chocolate over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens, about 10 min.
Cream shortening and brown sugar thoroughly.
Measure flour by dipping method or by sifting.
Mix flour, soda, and salt; stir in.
Mix in rolled oats and nuts.
Press half of mixture over bottom of pan.
Spread with date mixture; top with remaining crumbly mixture, pressing top lightly.
Bake 25 to 30 min., or until golden brown.
