Cool Whip

Cool whip is the name of the brand currently owned by Kraft Foods for a non dairy whipping cream. It is imitation cream as it does not contain any milk fat. It is majorly sold in North America and Canada. It is used for topping desserts and cakes. It has a taste and texture very similar to whipped cream. It is a cold chain product sold in 226 g tubs.


Cool whip was first launch by Bird’s eye division of General Foods in the year 1967. It was later merged into Kraft Foods. It was invented by William Mitchell.


As per the label claim, Original Cool Whip contains –

Water, corn syrup, sodium caseinate, hydrogenated vegetable oil (coconut and palm kernel oil), high fructose corn syrup, xanthan and guar gum, natural and artificial flavors, polysorbate 60, beta carotene (color) and sorbitan monostearate. Since 2010, skimmed milk and light cream are also being added to Cool Whip.


· Original – The regular Cool Whip.

· Extra creamy – This variant is creamier than the original one.

· French Vanilla – Vanilla flavoured Cool Whip. This is included in season’s delight.

· Chocolate – Cocoa and chocolate flavoured topping

· Light – This is a low fat variant for weight watchers and dieters.

· Cinnamon – Cinnamon flavoured variant is available during Christmas and thanksgiving.

· Sugar free – Splenda is used for sweetening the product. This reduces the calorific value.

· Aerosol Can was introduced for easier use.

Culinary Uses

Cool whip is commonly used to make desserts and salads. Some of the uses are –

· Chocolate mousse – Instant chocolate pudding is used and cool whip is mixed in it and set to make chocolate mousse.

· Fruit cream pie – Readymade pie crust is used or one is made using graham crackers. It is filled with pie filling and fruits. Finally, it is topped with cool whip.

· Instant Parfaits – Layered puddings and desserts are made using cool whip. Cakes, biscuits and fruits are used.

· Frosting – Cool whip is used to frost the cake.

· Cheesecake – It is easy to make no bake cheesecake using cool whip.

Storing and Buying Cool Whip

· Cool Whip has to be stored in frozen condition.

· It is available in all the leading supermarkets.

· It has a shelf life of 3 months.

· Cool whip has almost half calories as compared to fresh whipped dairy cream.

· It is better for people suffering from lactose intolerance. Although it has a milk derivative but it is lactose free.

· Fresh cream is high in saturated fat whereas Cool Whip does not have any saturated fat.
