Soft shell crabs are consumed as popular seafood and even served in restaurants. Soft shell crabs are actually crabs that have recently shed their shell and therefore have a soft shell covering them that is desirable for consumption. Crabs remain in the soft shell condition till four days after molting. Such crabs have to be kept alive till just before cooking to get fresh crabmeat. Soft shell crabs can be prepared with stuffing, as soft shell crab linguine or fried with vegetables to prepare side dish or a main course dish with them.
