Like all other frozen food, it is important to thaw asparagus before cooking. However, do not defrost the vegetable much ahead of cooking as doing so can lead to significant loss of texture and taste.
To thaw the asparagus, add the frozen shoots to ½ cup of boiling water. As the water starts to bubble, reduce the temperature, cover the pan with a lid, and simmer until the shoots are tender enough.
To stir-fry the asparagus, heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a wok or skillet over medium-high heat until you see fumes rising out of it. Add the asparagus and cook for three to five minutes, stirring it continuously, until the asparagus is lightly crisp. Remove the asparagus from the wok and serve hot.
If you wish to steam frozen asparagus, all you need to do is to fill a pot with water and place a steamer basket inside it. Place the steamer and the pot on your stovetop and allow the water to boil. You do not have to defrost frozen asparagus in advance here. Just directly add the frozen pieces of asparagus into the steamer and cover the pot with a lid. Steam it for sometime until nice and tender. Remove from the pot and serve hot.
