Red And Green Anise Cookies

Ingredients
  Active dry yeast 2 1⁄4 Teaspoon (1 Package)
  Warm water 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)
  Salt 2 Teaspoon
  All purpose flour 5 Cup (80 tbs)
  Sugar 3 Tablespoon
  Butter 1 Cup (16 tbs) (At Room Temperature)
  Vegetable shortening 1 Cup (16 tbs) (At Room Temperature)
  Anise extract 4 Teaspoon
  Baking powder 1 Teaspoon
  Red color sugar 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs) (For Decorating)
  Green color sugar 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs) (For Decorating)
Directions

Dissolve yeast in water in a large bowl.
Add salt and about 1 cup flour; mix very well.
Add all other ingredients except the remaining flour and baking powder; mix thoroughly.
Add remaining flour and baking powder; mix well.
Make 6 or 8 balls; with the palm of your hand, make long, thin rolls (about the size of the ring finger) and cut them into squares.
Place pieces, leaving space between them, on a cookie sheet.
Make a cut on top of each.
Bake at 350°F about 25 minutes, or until golden brown.
Remove from cookie sheet and coat with red and green sugar.
Cool on wire racks.
