Old Fashioned Lace Cookies

Ingredients
  All purpose flour 1 Cup (16 tbs)
  Nutmeg 1 Dash
  Cinnamon 1 Teaspoon
  Salt 1⁄4 Teaspoon
  Soda 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Baking powder 3⁄4 Teaspoon
  Butter 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)
  Sugar 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)
  Sorghum 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs), colored molasses (colored molasses or other light)
  Lemon extract 1 Teaspoon
Directions

Sift flour, measure, and resift 3 times with spices, salt, soda and baking powder.
Melt butter with sugar and molasses over boiling water and remove from heat.
Add dry ingredients and lemon extract and beat until smooth; let stand over hot water for 5 minutes.
Drop by half teaspoonfuls onto a greased baking sheet, 3 inches apart.
Bake in a moderately slow oven (325° F.) for 10 minutes.
Allow to cool for 2 or 3 minutes before removing from pan to cake rack with a spatula.
Makes about 5 dozen cookies.
The cookies are quite pliable when warm and can be shaped with the hands into cups or ruffles, or rolled into cones around the handle of a wooden mixing spoon.
