Combine sugar, cornstarch and salt in a deep, 1 quart, heat-resistant, non-metallic casserole.
Gradually add milk, stirring constantly.
Heat, uncovered, on roast for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Allow to cook just until mixture begins to boil.
Stir in vanilla.
