Coconut Dessert


Coconut Dessert is a sweet dish usually made with coconut, milk and sugar. The coconut is either grated, cut into small pieces and in some cases ground in the mixer, depending on the recipe. Some desserts are even made with dessicated coconut, especially in the case of cakes, macaroons, etc. Some popular coconut dessert recipes are Coconut Laddu, Coconut Barfi, Coconut Cookies and Cakes, and even Coconut Candies. Though certain European cuisines and even American cuisines include desserts made of coconut, it is the Indian cuisine that can boast of some delectable coconut desserts. In fact, in South of India, even coconut milk is used for making “Payasam” (a sweet coconut pudding), a delicious Coconut Dessert.

 


Origin
Coconut Dessert originated in the Indian sub-continent, especially in Kerala, the southern state of India due to the abundance in the coconut cultivation. Other than this, other coastal regions such as the west coast of India is also known for using coconut in various dishes, which also includes coconut dessert recipes. In fact, coconut is considered auspicious in this part of the world; hence its usage for culinary purpose is quite evident, more so during festivals and other times in the form of Coconut Dessert.

 


Preparation of Coconut Dessert
Coconut Dessert is a sweet dish generally made with either grated, ground or finely cut coconut. Other basic ingredients that go into making any kind of the dessert are milk and sugar. However, milk can be substituted with sweetened condensed milk, in which case sugar can be avoided. In case of baked items, all purpose flour and butter too are used. Coconut Dessert recipes such as Laddu and Barfi are usually prepared by cooking grated coconut in the milk and then sugar added and in some cases sugar syrup is prepared and once it reaches ‘one string’ consistency, the coconut is added. Similarly, most cuisines have such recipes of Coconut Dessert.

 


Variation
Coconut Dessert has variations to suit the palette of various people. Coconut desserts are either in cooked form or baked form. Some popular Coconut Dessert recipes are –

 


Coconut Lemon Blueberry Cheesecake Bars – This dessert contains coconut flour and grated coconut as a dressing. The bars have filling of cream cheese and blueberry mixed with certain other ingredients that enhance the taste.

 


Coconut Macaroons, Coconut Cream Pie, Coconut Cake with Saffron Cream, Coconut Crème Brulee are some baked coconut dessert recipes other than the traditional desserts made with coconut in the Indian sub-continent.

 


Advantages and Disadvantages

 


Coconut Dessert has certain advantages as well as disadvantages. The advantage is that since coconut is quite rich in itself, when cooked with milk and other ingredients, it adds a lot of flavor and richness to the dish. However, the disadvantage is that because of the oil coconut desserts tend to spoil fast and do not have a long shelf life.
