This chutney is a very good combination for idly and dosa.
Ingredients
  Jeera 1⁄2 Teaspoon (Jeeragam)
  Asafoetida 1 Pinch
  Red chilies 6
  Red chillies 6
  Salt 3⁄4 Teaspoon
  Tamarind 1
  Tomatoes 2
  Oil 2 Teaspoon
  Mustard seeds 1 Teaspoon
  Urad dal 1 Teaspoon
  Curry leaves 1 Tablespoon
Chopped red onion/2 chopped small onion 2 Teaspoon
Directions

* First grind jeera, asafoetida powder, dry red chillies, salt, tamarind piece and tomato nicely as a paste without any water.

* Next add the onion and grind it lightly, don't make it in a fine paste.

* Now in a pan season with the said ingrediants and fry the onion for sometime and pour the grind mix and close a lid and boil in medium heat for 10 - 15 mins and remove.

* Good with Idly and dosai.

I like this chutney a lot. I prefer it more with plain dosas !

Yeah...this will go well with idly & dosas too. My mom makes this chutney whenever she makes south Indian stuff.

Hi Jayashree, This chutney is one of my favourite. My grandma makes this onion chutney( 'karupu vengaaya chutney' i used to call like this), I love to add gingerly oil( nallennai) to this and eat with hot idly. But, When i tried making, my chutney looked pinkish and not brown, your recipe sounds exactly the same. I will surely try and see..

I think the color of the chutney depends on the color of the onion that we use also the amount of onion that we use. Maybe try little less onion next time.

I also love onion chutney. There is another one that is always bright red and simple but greast taste. I think it is just vinegar, sliced white onions and chile/chili. I must try this recipe of yours. Shanti/Mary-Anne
