Bittersweet chocolate is essentially a mixture of chocolate liquor, sugar, cocoa butter, and sometimes vanilla. Chocolate liquor contains no alcohol and is a form of cocoa produced by grinding cocoa beans down to liquid form.


Substitute Bittersweet chocolate for Unsweetened Chocolate

  • The only difference between these two varieties of chocolates is that while bittersweet chocolate contains about some sugar (about 40%), unsweetened chocolate contains no sugar at all. So if your recipe demands unsweetened chocolate, with some thoughtfulness and knowledge, you can use bittersweet chocolate instead.
  • If the recipe demands 5 ounces of unsweetened chocolate, you will need to use about 9 ounces of bittersweet chocolate.
  • Also, be careful of the amount of sugar required, if the recipe requires 8 ounces of sugar, then subtract the amount of sugar in bittersweet chocolate from the total sugar required. In this example you will need to add only 4 ounces of extra sugar.


Candies Using Bittersweet Chocolate

Though milk and dark chocolates are used in making candies, you can also use bittersweet chocolates. The candies made with bittersweet chocolates, may not be as sweet, but have quiet a pleasant taste.

Well, this is an innovative idea to use bittersweet chocolate. This pizza is a huge chocolate confection that is sure to surprise your folks. Use good amount of bittersweet chocolate as the base, with layers of milk and white chocolates. You can make the pizza more attractive by topping it with colored candies.


Hot Chocolate Drink

For a hot cup of drinking chocolate, chop chocolate into small pieces and place in a big bowl. Boil milk and some milk the bowl of bittersweet chocolate and let the chocolate melt. Stir occasionally. Now put this milk and chocolate mixture in a cup, pour more hot milk over it, add some sugar if required, as there you have the amazing hot chocolate drink.


Baked Goods and Truffles

Besides the above mentioned uses, you could also add bittersweet chocolate in your cookies, cakes, muffins, and other baked goods, depending on the bitterness you require.


Recent studies have revealed certain health benefits from the regular consumption of small quantities of bittersweet chocolate. Due to its high cocoa content, dark chocolate is a good source of certain flavonoids and antioxidants which help in keeping the heart healthy and lowering blood pressure.
