Stir together onions, cheese, and 6 tablespoons of the mayonnaise until well blended; add more mayonnaise, if necessary, to give mixture a spreading consistency.
Arrange bread slices side by side in a 10- by 15-inch rimmed baking pan.
Broil about 6 inches below heat until bread is toasted.
Turn slices over and spread cheese mixture on untoasted side.
Broil about 6 inches below heat until bubbly and lightly browned, about 3 minutes.
