Steak Casserole

Steak casserole is a beef steak based dish which is often combined with some form of broth like chicken soup, beef broth, or tomato soup, and several other ingredients, which may consist of rice, onions, tomatoes, potatoes, and various spices, seasonings, and sauces to prepare a savory and filling casserole, which can be either baked in oven or cooked in Crockpot. The steak used for preparing the casserole may either consist of a round beef steak or sirloin beef steak, with the former referring to steak from round primal cut and the latter referring to cut from rear back segment of beef.

Commonly Used Ingredients and Preparation Overview of Steak Casseroles

The simplest steak casserole recipe suggests the use of sirloin steak, shortening (solid fat), chopped onions, chopped celery, mushroom soup, chicken soup, water, salt, and uncooked rice.

The meat pieces are browned in shortening, before stirring in celery, onions, and other ingredients. The entire mix is then transferred to a casserole saucier and baked in oven for a couple of hours.

Steak Casserole Recipe Variations

There are numerous recipe variations of steak casserole, a few of which have been discussed below:

  • Steak bake casserole- The recipe for this casserole suggests first baking seasoned and flour coated steak strips in a casserole saucier, for a few minutes before combining it with a mix of onions, tomatoes, molasses, soy sauce, mushrooms, and pepper, and baking the dish again. Thereafter, green beans are stirred in, and the muffin mix is dropped into the casserole saucier, before baking it again. The muffin mix is prepared by combining together baking powder, flour, salt, dry mustard, oil, eggs, and milk.

  • Potato based variant- it is a layered steak casserole which is prepared by arranging a layer of seasoned steak pieces (sirloin or round) at the bottom of a casserole saucier; topping the meat with sliced onions and thinly sliced potatoes; seasoning to taste; and pouring over tomato soup at the top. The casserole is baked twice, first covered and then uncovered.

  • Beef steak and rice casserole- A mixture of minced onions, uncooked rice, and beef broth is poured at the bottom of casserole saucier, topped with small pieces of butter and round beef steak cubes, and baked to prepare a filling casserole.

  • Slow cooker beef steak casserole- the recipe for this casserole suggests placing cubed beef steaks in a Crockpot or slow cooker before stirring in flour mixture, prepared by combining together salt, pepper, and flour. Thereafter, bay leaf, garlic, paprika, onion, Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, carrots, potatoes, and celery are stirred in, and the dish is cooked for a number of hours (around 10-12 hours) on low heat setting.

  • Steak and red wine casserole- flour coated beef steak cubes are browned in a mix of butter and oil, before combining them with a cooked mix of onions, garlic, celery, tomato paste, and red wine. Tomatoes are stirred in and the entire dish is transferred into a casserole saucier and baked for a couple of hours, while making sure to stir the mix at regular intervals. Sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and salt are used to season the casserole. This steak casserole is served popularly with potato mash prepared by combining boiled and mashed potatoes with milk and butter.
