Burger Casserole

 

Burger casserole is a dish prepared by combining any ground meat product, like chicken, beef, or turkey, with several ingredients like onions, cheese, and seasonings, and coating the entire dish with a soupy mix usually made by combining together cream, soup, tomato sauce, and water. The casserole is baked for some time before serving it hot. There are quite a few variations of the dish, which suggest the use of varied meat product, and different ingredients for topping and coating. A few popular variations consist of cheese burger casserole, turkey burger casserole, and cabbage burger casserole. Vegan versions of the burger casserole can be prepared with the usage of vegetables in place of meat.

 

Commonly Used Ingredients and Preparation Overview of Burger Casserole

There are a number of ways of preparing burger casserole with the difference lying in terms of ingredients used, with basic ingredient, i.e. hamburger (any ground meat), remaining the same in all the recipe variations. One of the examples suggests using hash brown potatoes, browned hamburger, chopped broccoli, chopped onions, French fried onions, celery soup cream, milk, cheddar cheese (shredded), garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, and salt.

 

Potatoes are baked for a few minutes, and then covered with chopped onions, hamburger (browned with onion), French fried onions, and broccoli. Milk, celery soup cream, spices, and cheese are then combined together and poured over burger mix, baked for a few minutes and then baked again after pouring again some cheese and French fried onions.   

 

Burger Casserole Recipe Variations

Some of the popular variations are discussed hereunder:

 

  • Cheese burger casserole- this dish is prepared by browning ground beef with onions, and stirring in catsup (sour and sweet condiment prepared with vinegar, tomatoes, sugar, spices, and seasonings), tomato sauce, and pepper. Half of the meat mix is spread on a greased baking pan, and topped with three or four cheese slices, and the remaining meat mixture. Refrigerated biscuits are arranged around the edges and the dish is baked after placing a slice of cheese in the center.

 

  • Turkey burger casserole- this is a turkey based casserole which is prepared by sautéing celery and turkey together in butter, pouring the mix in a casserole dish, and topping it with a mix of water chestnuts, seasoned wild rice and long grain, and chicken soup or mushroom soup. The casserole is baked for around forty minutes before adding noodles, and baked for another fifteen minutes. This casserole is served with soy sauce.

 

  • Cabbage burger casserole- the recipe for this casserole suggests placing coarsely cut cabbage in casserole saucer, pouring a mix of cooked turkey or hamburger, onions, and rice over the cabbage, and coating the entire dish with a mix of water and tomato soup. This burger casserole is baked for around an hour before serving.

 

  • Ground veggie burger casserole- this is the vegan version of burger casserole which is prepared by combining cooked rice with crumbled vegetable patties (made with potatoes, onions, cabbage, peas, and several spices and seasonings), and cheese.
