Easter candy refers to the candy that is eaten around the time of Easter. Candies have become an indispensable part of Easter tradition since the early 19th century. The Easter candy is almost considered synonymous to the chocolate candy, although other types of candies such as jelly beans and marshmallow peeps are a regular fare during Easter. Chocolate candy – The first chocolate candy was made in Germany, which then spread to France and the rest of Europe. Chocolate had a huge market in the 1800s, and the chocolate companies began associating chocolate candies with Easter. As the egg was considered as a symbol of new life, the chocolate candy was first made to resemble the egg. Soon, candies in other shapes including bunnies and other spring symbols were made in a large scale, especially for Easter. The chocolate egg or chocolate bunny, considered as the primary Easter candy, is usually hollow, although it appears to look like a solid chunk of chocolate. Being hollow, these are easy to bite and eat as opposed to eating a huge solid chocolate. Smaller chocolate bunnies made of solid chocolate are also available.
Jelly Bean – The jelly beans are small colourful little beans in the shape of an egg. Due to its egg-like shape, it came to be associated with
Easter. As the Easter bunny had to deliver bright colourful eggs to good children, these little jelly beans proved to be the perfect match. Thus, jelly beans became a part of Easter in 1930 and remain the same down to this day. These are made in various flavors including cherry, blueberry, strawberry, grape, orange, and lime.
Marshmallow Peeps – These are colourful little chicks made of marshmallow. Different shapes of this candy such as marshmallow eggs and marshmallow bunnies are also available. The first marshmallow peep was made in the 1950s, and it is said that initially one peep took 27 hours to make. As they grew in popularity, these candies were then made in a large scale with the help of machines. Available in colors such as yellow, pink, blue, lavender, and white, these soon became one of the popular Easter candies.
Crème Eggs – Made by Cadbury, these crème eggs were first manufactured in the 1960s and have become popular during Easter. These have a shell made of milk chocolate with a fondant filling in the center. The creme filling is in yellow and white to resemble a real egg. These crème eggs are available in a variety of flavors including caramel, orange, chocolate, berry, mint, and much more.
Home-Made Easter Candies
Easter candies can be made at home too. Here are some ideas for the same.
Chocolate egg – This candy can be made by pouring melted chocolate into a real egg shell. This is then refrigerated overnight, and the mold is broken the next day to take out the chocolate egg.
Bird Nest – This Easter candy can be made like a nest with mini eggs. The nest is made with melted chocolate and shredded coconut. A spoon or something similar can be used to get the shape of the nest. Once cooled, the nest can be filled with jelly beans or mini egg candies.
The largest Easter egg was 25 feet tall and weighed about 8968 pounds. It was made with chocolate and marshmallow and was supported by a steel frame.
