1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, and 1/8 teaspoon salt in a saucepan.
Heat to boiling and boil, uncovered, 5 minutes.
Add 2 cups (about 1/2 pound) washed and sorted cranberries.
Continue to boil, uncovered, without stirring, about 5 minutes, or until the skins pop.
Remove from heat and stir in 3 to 4 tablespoons brandy.
