Tourtiere -French-Canadian Meat Pie For Christmas!

A tourtiere is a wonderful thing and definitely should be on your list! Quebecois meat pie, Tourtiere is a classic Canadian Christmas recipe. Thank you to Sharron for sending me your recipe!

Ingredients

Ground pork 1 Pound
Cold water 1 Cup (16 tbs)
Finely chopped onion 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
Finely chopped celery 1/4 Cup (4 tbs)
Ground black pepper 1/2 Teaspoon
Bay leaves 1
Dried thyme 1 Teaspoon
Dried rosemary 1/4 Teaspoon
Grated nutmeg 1/2 Teaspoon
Cinnamon 1/2 Teaspoon
Allspice 1/4 Teaspoon
Salt 1/2 Teaspoon
Old fashioned rolled oats/Grated boiled potato
9 inch double crust pie pastry 1
Beaten egg 1 (for glaze)

Directions

GETTING READY:

Preheat oven to 425F.

MAKING:

In a large frying pan, combine pork with cold water and bring it to boil.

When the mixture turns soupy, add onion, celery, pepper, bay leaves, thyme, rosemary, nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice and mix well. Cover and cook for 1 hours. Stir often and add water if required. Halfway though season with salt.

Add oats and stir for 1-2 minutes. Remove bay leaves and allow to cool.

Line pie plate with pastry and spread meat mixture over it. Brush egg over edges and seal edges as shown in the video.

Pop into oven and bake for 15 minutes at 425F. Reduce heat to 375F and bake for another 20-25 minutes.
