Swirl Cake is a particular kind of cake where two flavors are swirled together to produce marble effect, with the cake also being termed as marble cake at times. Normally light and dark batter is used to generate the marble effect. A marble cake can be something as simple as the vanilla and chocolate cake or strawberry and vanilla cake. History of Swirl Cake
The first references of the marble cake were made in the last quarter of 19th century. There is also mention regarding the next generation chequered marble cakes called Harlequin cakes. The first generation marble cakes appeared in Victorian age in both England and America. The Victorian American women used molasses, spices, raisins, and currants to produce the dark swirls. The simpler swirl cakes were prepared by burning half of the whole egg batter. With the advent of ambitious recipes of the scene, the marble cakes were prepared with gold and silver effect. The gold and silver batters were used in the preparation of the cake. Along with it came other bicolor cakes too.
