|Chopped dates||1 1⁄2 Cup (24 tbs)|
|Boiling water||1 Cup (16 tbs)|
|Shortening||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)|
|Sugar||1 Cup (16 tbs)|
|Sifted all purpose flour||1 1⁄2 Cup (24 tbs)|
|Chopped california walnuts||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)|
Combine dates with water; cool to room temperature.
Stir shortening to soften.
Gradually add sugar; cream thoroughly.
Add vanilla and egg; beat well.
Sift flour, soda, and salt together 2 times; add to creamed mixture alternately with date mixture, beating after each addition.
Bake in greased 13x9x2 inch pan in moderate oven (350°) 25 to 30 minutes.
Choco Date Cake: In Date Cake recipe above, sift 2 tablespoons cocoa with dry ingredients and omit nuts from batter.
Pour into greased 13x9x2 inch pan; sprinkle with the nuts and 1/2 to 1 CUP semisweet chocolate pieces.
Bake as above.
