Ingredients
  Shortening 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)
  Brown sugar 2 Cup (32 tbs)
  Eggs 2
  Sour milk 1 Cup (16 tbs)
  Pastry flour 2 1⁄2 Cup (40 tbs)
  Soda 1 Teaspoon
  Cinnamon 2 Teaspoon
  Allspice 1 Teaspoon
  Cloves 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Nutmeg 1 Teaspoon
Directions

Cream shortening and add sugar gradually while creaming, taking care to work smooth all lumps.
Add well beaten eggs and mix thoroughly.
Sift together dry ingredients and add to mixture alternately with sour milk.
Bake in three 9-inch greased and floured layer tins in a moderate oven of 375° F. for 20 min. or in a greased and floured loaf pan at a temperature of 350° F. for 45 to 55 min.
Frost with any desired icing.
