Mother's Depression Fruit Cake

Ingredients
  Shortening 1 Cup (16 tbs)
  Sugar 1 1⁄2 Cup (24 tbs)
  Flour 3 1⁄4 Cup (52 tbs)
  Cinnamon 1 Teaspoon
  Cloves 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Fruit juice 1 Cup (16 tbs)
  Baking soda 1 Teaspoon
  Glazed fruit 1 1⁄4 Cup (20 tbs)
  Dates 1 Cup (16 tbs), chopped
  Nuts 1 1⁄4 Cup (20 tbs)
  Egg 1 , beaten
  Brandy 1 Tablespoon
Directions

MAKING
1. In a bowl, cream together the shortening and the sugar; add three cups of flour, cinnamon and cloves to it
2. In a bowl, along with a quarter cup of flour, mix together one cup of glazed fruits and one of nuts
3. In one cup of hot syrup taken from canned fruits, add the baking soda
4. Combine all these mixtures along with egg in a large bowl and pour it into two greased bread tins
5. Bake them at 350° F for fifty minutes
6. In the meantime, in a saucepan, dissolve half a cup of sugar in half a cup of water; add brandy or rum to it and heat it thoroughly

SERVING
7. When done, cool the cakes, decorate with glazed fruit and nuts and drizzle hot brandy syrup on top
