|Baking soda||3⁄4 Teaspoon|
|Lemon sauce||1 Tablespoon|
|Cream cheese spread||1⁄4 Cup (4 tbs) (Or Topping)|
|Cream cheese topping||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)|
Heat oven to 350°.
Grease square pan, 8 X 8 X 2 inches.
Beat shortening and sugar in small mixer bowl 5 minutes on high speed, scraping bowl occasionally.
Mix in flour and salt.
Press half of the sugar mixture evenly in bottom of pan.
Mix water, molasses and soda; pour half over sugar mixture in pan.
Sprinkle with half of the remaining sugar mixture.
Pour remaining molasses mixture over top; sprinkle with remaining sugar mixture.
Bake 35 to 40 minutes.
