|Canned applesauce||16 Ounce|
|Pitted dates||12 Ounce, cut up (1 Package)|
|Baking soda||1 3⁄4 Teaspoon|
|Unsifted flour||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)|
|Shortening||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)|
|Sugar||18 Tablespoon (1 Cup Plus 2 Tablespoon)|
|Semi-sweet chocolate chips||6 Ounce|
|Chopped walnut meats||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)|
Grease and flour a baking pan 13x9x2".
In a medium saucepan, bring applesauce to a boil, remove from heat, stir in dates and 1 tsp.soda.
On waxed paper, thoroughly stir together the flour, remaining 3/4 tsp soda and the salt.
In a large mixing bowl cream shortening and 1 cup sugar; stir in applesauce mixture.
Turn into prepared pan.
Stir together the remaining 2 tbs sugar, chocolate chips and nuts.
Bake in preheated 350 degree oven until a cake tester inserted in center comes out free of batter.
Cool cake in pan on wire rack; cut in pan.
