Apple Lane Cake

Ingredients
  Butter/Margarine 1 Cup (16 tbs), softened
  Vanilla extract 1 Teaspoon
  Sugar 1 1⁄2 Cup (24 tbs)
  All purpose flour 2 1⁄2 Cup (40 tbs)
  Baking powder 2 Teaspoon
  Salt 1⁄4 Teaspoon
  Milk 2⁄3 Cup (10.67 tbs)
  Egg whites 8 (Reserve Yolks For Filling)
  Shredded pared apple 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs) (Red Or Golden Delicious Variety)
  Apple filling 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)
  White frosting 1⁄4 Cup (4 tbs)
Directions

1. Cream butter, vanilla extract, and sugar in a large bowl. Mix flour, baking powder, and salt. Blend into creamed mixture alternately with milk.
2. Beat egg whites until stiff, but not dry. Stir a little beaten egg white into batter. Stir in shredded apple. Fold batter into remaining egg whites. Turn into 3 greased and floured 9-inch round layer cake pans.
3. Bake at 350°F 20 to 25 minutes, or until cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes; turn out of pans and cool completely on wire racks.
4. Spread Apple Filling between layers and on top of cake. Frost sides of cake with White Frosting. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
