Old-Fashioned Spice Cake

This Old-Fashioned Spice Cake surprises you with the flavors packed into it. For those who loves the strong taste of the spices in dessert, this is defintely the dish for you. Try this Old-Fashioned Spice Cake for once, I bet, you will get a lot of compliments for this one!!
  Sifted cake flour 2 1⁄4 Cup (36 tbs) (Swans Down)
  Baking powder 1 Teaspoon (Calumet)
  Salt 1 Teaspoon
  Baking soda 3⁄4 Teaspoon
  Cloves 3⁄4 Teaspoon
  Cinnamon 3⁄4 Teaspoon
  Black pepper 1 Pinch
  Shortening 3⁄4 Cup (12 tbs)
  Firmly packed brown sugar 3⁄4 Cup (12 tbs)
  Granulated sugar 1 Cup (16 tbs)
  Eggs 3 , unbeaten
  Buttermilk 18 Tablespoon (1 Cup Plus 2 Tablespoons)
  Vanilla 1 Teaspoon

Sift flour, baking powder, salt, soda, spices, and pepper together.
Cream shortening thoroughly.
Gradually add sugars and cream together until light and fluffy.
Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each.
Add flour alternately with buttermilk.
Beat after each addition until smooth.
Add vanilla.
Pour batter into three 8-inch layer pans or two 9-inch layer pans which have been lined on bottoms with paper.
Bake in moderate oven (350°F.) 25 to 30 minutes for the 8-inch layers and 30 to 35 minutes for the 9-inch layers.
Frost with a butter cream frosting.
