Spiced Red Cabbage

The spiced red cabbage is a fresh and tangy recipe of cabbage prepared along with apples and onions. Cooked in the oven with brown sugar, the spiced red cabbage is flavored with wine vinegar, nutmeg and seasoned to taste with salt and pepper.
Ingredients
  Red cabbage 1 Pound
  Butter 1 Ounce
  Onion 1 Small, chopped
  Cooking apples 8 Ounce, peeled, cored and chopped
  Freshly ground black pepper To Taste
  Freshly grated nutmeg To Taste
  Water 1 1⁄2 Tablespoon
  Wine vinegar 1 1⁄2 Tablespoon
  Brown sugar 2 Teaspoon
  Salt To Taste
Directions

Heat the oven to 300°F (Gas Mark 2, 150°C).
Discard the outer leaves of the cabbage, cut it into quarters and remove the stalk, wash and shred finely.
Melt the butter and fry the onions until softened.
Add the apples and cook for 1-2 minutes.
Into a casserole put first a layer of cabbage, then a layer of the onion and apple mixture and season well with salt, pepper and plenty of nutmeg.
Continue adding alternate layers until all the vegetables and fruit are in the casserole.
Add the water, wine vinegar and brown sugar.
Cover with a lid and cook in the oven for 2 hours.
