|Unsweetened chocolate square||2 Ounce (2 squares)|
|Sugar||1 Cup (16 tbs)|
|Eggs||2 , well beaten|
|Applesauce||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)|
|Gold medal flour||1 Cup (16 tbs)|
|Baking powder||1⁄2 Teaspoon|
|Nuts||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs), chopped|
Heat oven to 350°
Melt shortening and chocolate over hot water.
Blend in sugar, eggs, applesauce, and vanilla.
Measure flour by dipping method or by sifting.
Stir dry ingredients together; blend into shortening mixture.
Spread batter in greased and floured square pan, 9 x 9 x 1 3/4".
Bake 35 to 40 min., or until top springs back when lightly touched.
While hot, cut into 2 1/4 x 1 1/2" bars.
