Preheat oven to 350°.
Lightly grease loaf pan.
Remove orange peel from orange with a sharp knife, scraping away all of the white pectin from the peel.
Cut orange in half and squeeze juice into measuring cup; add boiling water to make 1 cup.
Grind orange peel in food processor.
Grind dates or raisins in food processor and add to orange peel to make 1 cup.
Cream butter and sugar; add egg and vanilla.
Sift dry ingredients together, and add to creamed mixture alternating with peel mixture and juice.
Beat well; add nuts.
Bake for 50 minutes.
Allow to cool in pan.
