Special Occasion Bread

  Active dry yeast 1
  Sugar 3 Tablespoon
  Egg yolks 3
  Milk 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)
  All purpose flour 4 Cup (64 tbs)
  Salt 1 Teaspoon
  Shortening 1 Cup (16 tbs)
  Sugar 3⁄4 Cup (12 tbs)
  Ground cinnamon 1 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Egg whites 3 , beaten
  Dates 1 1⁄2 Cup (24 tbs), chopped
  Nuts 1 Cup (16 tbs), chopped

Soften yeast in 1/2 CUP warm water; stir in 3 tablespoons sugar.
Combine egg yolks and milk.
Sift flour and salt together: cut in shortening till like coarse crumbs.
Stir in yeast and egg yolk mixtures; mix well.
Form into ball; place in greased bowl, turning once to grease surface; cover; chill overnight.
Divide dough into 3 parts.
On lightly floured surface, roll each into 15x8-inch rectangle.
Stir the 3/4 cup sugar and cinnamon into egg whites.
Spread 1/3 over each rectangle, leaving 1/2 inch around edge.
Sprinkle each with 1/3 of the dates and nuts.
Starting with long side of dough, roll as for jelly roll; seal edges and ends.
Place on greased baking sheet; form into crescent shape.
Let rise till doubled, about 45 to 50 minutes.
Bake at 350° about 25 minutes.
Glaze with confectioners' icing while hot.
Decorate with nuts or candied fruits, if desired.
