Spiced Date Bread

Ingredients
  Dates 1 Pound, chopped (450 Gram)
  Milk 6 Fluid Ounce (175 Milliliter)
  Butter 2 Ounce (50 Gram)
  Self rising flour 12 Ounce (350 Gram)
  Salt 1 Pinch
  Baking powder 7 1⁄2 Milliliter (1 1/2 Tablespoon)
  Grated nutmeg 1 Teaspoon
  Ground allspice 1 Teaspoon
  Sugar 2 Ounce (50 Gram)
  Egg 1
Directions

Put the dates, milk and butter into a saucepan and heat gently until the butter has melted.
Sift the flour, salt, baking powder and spices into a bowl.
Gradually beat in the sugar, egg and date mixture.
Spoon into a well-greased 1 kg./2 lb.loaf tin and put into the oven preheated to moderate (180°C/350°F or Gas Mark 4).
Bake for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until a knife inserted into the centre comes out clean.
Cool on a wire rack.
