Spiced Date Bread
|Dates||1 Pound, chopped (450 Gram)|
|Milk||6 Fluid Ounce (175 Milliliter)|
|Butter||2 Ounce (50 Gram)|
|Self rising flour||12 Ounce (350 Gram)|
|Baking powder||7 1⁄2 Milliliter (1 1/2 Tablespoon)|
|Grated nutmeg||1 Teaspoon|
|Ground allspice||1 Teaspoon|
|Sugar||2 Ounce (50 Gram)|
Put the dates, milk and butter into a saucepan and heat gently until the butter has melted.
Sift the flour, salt, baking powder and spices into a bowl.
Gradually beat in the sugar, egg and date mixture.
Spoon into a well-greased 1 kg./2 lb.loaf tin and put into the oven preheated to moderate (180°C/350°F or Gas Mark 4).
Bake for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until a knife inserted into the centre comes out clean.
Cool on a wire rack.
