Brown meat on all sides in hot shortening in large heavy kettle.
Remove meat and pour off fat.
Add water and bring to boil.
Put meat on rack in kettle; add pickling spice.
Simmer, covered, for 2 1/2 hours.
Add salt and fruits; simmer for 1 hour longer, or until meat is tender.
Slice meat and serve with the liquid poured over top.
Garnish with dried fruits.
Serve with noodles.
