Wine Marinated Beef Ragout

Ingredients
2 lbs stewing beef
3/4 cup dry red wine
1 clove garlic, crushed
1/4 cup chopped onion
1 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp monosodium glutamate
1/2 tsp pickling spice
2 tbs flour
4 slices side bacon, diced
1 (10-oz) can consomme
1 1/4 cups water
1/2 lb sliced mushrooms
6 small peeled onions
6 carrots, halved
Directions

Cut beef into 1 1/2-inch cubes; place in bowl and add the next six ingredients.
Cover and refrigerate overnight.
Remove meat from marinade; dredge in flour.
Fry bacon in a large skillet; add meat and brown thoroughly.
Stir in strained marinade, consomme and water; cover and simmer until tender (about 1 1/2 hours).
Add vegetables; cover and simmer 30 minutes more.
If desired, 5 or 6 small potatoes may be added with the other vegetables.
Thicken gravy.
Taste for extra seasoning.
