|Lean stewing beef/Lamb / pork||1 Pound, cut into 1 inch cubes|
|Vegetable oil||1⁄3 Cup (5.33 tbs)|
|Onions||2 Medium, sliced|
|Ground cinnamon||1⁄2 Teaspoon|
|Ground nutmeg||1⁄2 Teaspoon|
|Canned tomatoes||8 Ounce (1 Can)|
|Wheat bread slices/White bread slices||4 , buttered and quartered|
Lightly salt and pepper beef.
In skillet over moderate heat, fry beef cubes until browned.
Transfer meat to ovenproof dish.
In the same skillet, fry onions for5 minutes until soft, but not browned.
Stir in remaining ingredients (except bread); bring to a boil.
Pour over'meat; cover.
Bake in a 350 degree oven for 1 hour.
Taste and adjust seasonings, if necessary.
Arrange bread slices neatly on top; return to oven for 30 minutes (or until the bread is golden and crisp).
