Combine the chopped dates and water in a medium saucepan.
Simmer 5 to 10 minutes, stirring constantly.
To prepare the dough, cream together the brown sugar, shortening, egg, and vanilla in the Bosch bowl.
Combine the whole wheat flour, salt, baking soda, and rolled oats in a separate bowl, and gradually add to the creamed ingredients.
Divide dough in half.
Press half the dough into a 9 x 13inch baking dish.
Spread the cooled dates over the dough.
Sprinkle the remaining dough evenly on top, pressing down lightly.
Bake in a 375Â° F.
Oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until lightly browned.
While warm, cut into bars and remove from pan.
NOTE: Raisins, chopped dried apricots, or other dried fruits may be used in place of the chopped dates.
Fruit may be sweetened with honey, if needed.
