|Shortening||1 Cup (16 tbs)|
|Sugar||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)|
|Brown sugar||1 1⁄2 Cup (24 tbs)|
|Eggs||3 , separated|
|Flour||2 Cup (32 tbs)|
|Chocolate chips||1 Cup (16 tbs)|
|Nuts||1 Cup (16 tbs), chopped|
Cream shortening with sugar and 1/2 cup brown sugar until fluffy.
Beat egg yolks with 1 tablespoon water.
Add to sugar mixture; blend thoroughly.
Combine flour, salt and soda; blend into egg mix- ture.
Stir in vanilla.
Press dough into large, shallow baking pan; sprinkle with chocolate chips.
Beat egg whites until soft peaks form; add remaining brown sugar gradually.
Beat until glossy.
Spread over choco- late chips; sprinkle meringue with nuts.
Bake in 350-degree oven for 25 minutes.
Yield: 2 dozen bars.
