2. Blend shortening and sugar till creamy, fluffy and slight. Beat molasses and egg into the mixture. Sieve flour, soda, baking powder and salt and add to the creamed mixture and milk, taking turns. Add nuts and dates.
3. Take a 8 X 12 inch greased baking pan and bake for 25 to 30 minutes.
4. Allow to cool and cut into 1 X 2 inch bars.
