Candied Orange Date Bars
|Candied orange slices||1⁄2 Pound, cut in thirds|
|Pitted dates||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs), cut up|
|Sugar||1⁄4 Cup (4 tbs)|
|All purpose flour||1 Tablespoon|
|Boiling water||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)|
|Butter/Margarine||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)|
|Firmly packed brown sugar||1 Cup (16 tbs)|
|All purpose flour||1 3⁄4 Cup (28 tbs)|
|Baking soda||1 Teaspoon|
|Chopped walnuts||1 Cup (16 tbs)|
Combine orange slices, dates, sugar and flour in 2-quart bowl.
Toss lightly to distribute sugar and flour.
Pour boiling water over fruit.
MICROWAVE 2 MINUTES, 30 SECONDS to 3 MINUTES on HIGH, or until thick.
Mix butter, sugar and eggs thoroughly.
Blend in flour, soda, salt and vanilla.
Stir in nuts.
Spread half of batter in (8 x 8-inch) baking dish.
Cover evenly with filling.
Top with remaining batter.
MICROWAVE 7 MINUTES, 30 SECONDS to 8 MINUTES on HIGH, or until almost no imprint remains when touched in center.
