First Date Bars
|Flour||1 Cup (16 tbs)|
|Baking powder||1 Teaspoon|
|Grated orange zest||1 Teaspoon|
|Chopped dates||1 Cup (16 tbs)|
|Butter||4 Tablespoon, softened|
|Firmly packed brown sugar||1 Cup (16 tbs)|
|Orange juice||2 Tablespoon|
|Vanilla extract||1 Teaspoon|
|Chopped nuts||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)|
|Semisweet chocolate chips||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)|
1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9-inch square pan. In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, orange zest, and salt. Remove 1 tablespoon of flour mixture and toss with dates.
2. In a large bowl, beat butter and brown sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed until fluffy. Beat in eggs, orange juice, and vanilla until smooth.
3. Add flour mixture and beat on low speed until dough is smooth, scraping down side of bowl frequently with a rubber spatula. Stir in dates, nuts, and chocolate chips. Turn into prepared pan, being careful to level surface.
4. Bake 20 to 25 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in center comes out with a few moist crumbs dinging to it. Remove pan to rack. Let cool completely in pan before cutting into 20 bars.
