|Sifted flour||1 Cup (16 tbs)|
|Baking powder||1⁄2 Teaspoon (Calumet)|
|Baking soda||1⁄8 Teaspoon|
|Chopped nuts||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)|
|Shortening||1⁄3 Cup (5.33 tbs)|
|Firmly packed brown sugar||1 Cup (16 tbs)|
|Hot water||1 Tablespoon|
|Egg||1 , slightly beaten|
|Semi sweet chocolate chips/Lemon / caramel chips||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs) (Baker's)|
Sift flour, baking powder, soda, and salt together Add nuts and mix well.
Melt shortening in saucepan; remove from heat.
Add sugar and water; mix well.
Add egg and vanilla and blend.
Then add flour mixture, a small amount at a time, mixing well after each addition.
Turn into greased 9x9x2-inch pan.
Sprinkle chips over top.
Bake in moderate oven (350°F.) 20 to 25 minutes. (Do not overbake.) Cool in pan.
Then cut into bars.
