Egg Biryani

Egg Biryani refers to a dish made of rice, boiled eggs, several vegetables, and spices. There are several variations of this dish in terms of the ingredients used; however, the basic ingredients, i.e. eggs and rice remain the same in all the recipe variations. This egg based rice dish particularly belongs to the Indian cuisine, and is famous in several regions of the country, with slight differences in the method of preparation and ingredients used. Normally basmati rice is used in the preparation of this egg based rice dish. The dish is usually served along with raita, salad and thick gravy.

 

Egg Biryani Recipe- Ingredients Used and Preparation Overview

One of the recipes of egg biryani suggests the use of basmati rice, eggs, onions, tomatoes, coriander leaves, green chillies, saffron, ginger paste, yogurt, garlic paste, cardamom, oil or ghee, salt, and biryani masala.

 

Properly washed rice is combined along with water, salt, and cardamom and cooked. Onions, tomatoes, green chillies, garlic, ginger, and coriander leaves are chopped finely and sautéed in frying pan containing some oil or ghee. To this mix, sliced boiled eggs are added, followed by adding spice powder, cooked rice, yogurt, and saffron. The pot is covered with a lid with some hard object on the top, so as to avoid the fumes to come out. The biryani is cooked for a few minutes, and stirred properly before serving.

 

Egg Biryani Recipe Variations

The variations of the dish may include a change in the method of preparation or a change in the ingredients used. However, rice and eggs are used in all the recipe variations. A few variations of this egg based rice dish are explained hereunder:

 

  • One of the variations suggests the addition of turmeric powder and cinnamon to the dish.

 

  • The simplest way to make this egg and rice dish is to combine together onions, tomatoes, green chillies, garlic paste, ginger paste, and fry them for a few minutes in some oil, and then add rice, sliced boiled eggs, salt, red chilli powder, black pepper, and water, and cook the mixture collectively until rice is done.

 

  • A popular variation consists of Hyderabad egg biryani, in which boiled eggs are sliced and marinated in a mix of yogurt, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, salt, and garam masala, before using them to prepare the biryani. Oil is poured in a vessel and layered with the marinated eggs, followed by a layer of sautéed mix of onions, tomatoes, coriander leaves, mint leaves, garlic paste, ginger paste, and green chillies. Thereafter, half boiled rice is added and the biryani is allowed to cook at low flame for around half an hour after covering it with a lid. The egg biryani is stirred properly before serving it hot.
