Peel, core and thinly slice the apples.
Arrange apples in layers in a buttered casserole, sprinkling each layer with sugar and dotting with butter.
Cover the casserole and bake in a moderate oven (350° F.) for 40 minutes or until tender.
Serve hot with a sprinkling of sharp grated cheese, if desired or chill before serving.
