Homemade coleslaw is apparently the easiest salad recipe and can be prepared before any meal of the day. Coleslaw is a type of salad prepared mainly from shredded cabbage and is also referred to as cabbage salad. Traditionally, coleslaw is based only on cabbage, but over the years plenty of variations have evolved. Homemade coleslaw, therefore, can have carrots besides shredded raw cabbage. In America the coleslaw is preferred with mayonnaise or cheese. The salad can be served by the side of a meat dish or with finger snacks like French fries, hot dogs, sandwiches etc. It is usually stored in the refrigerator and is served cold; however, homemade coleslaw is equally good if served in normal room temperature. The shredded cabbage when replaced with broccoli heads is termed as broccoli slaw instead of coleslaw. The dressing used in preparing homemade coleslaw can be of the following types; Italian dressing, French dressing, mustard, mayonnaise or sour cream. The incorporation of carrots in the coleslaw recipe gives a vibrant color to the salad.
