Hawaiian Bread

Hawaiian bread, or bread produced and consumed in the Hawaiian islands, is bread enriched with fruit ingredients like pineapple juice, crushed pineapple, mashed bananas, coconut extract, etc. as well as spices like cinnamon and flavoring agents like vanilla and ginger.

The resulting baked product is deliciously sweet bread. Alternately, dough is prepared with the given ingredients, which is set aside to rise, and then baked in an oven till the outer surface is browned to the desired level.

 

Serving Hawaiian Bread

The bread can be served with a dip of sour cream and soup mix. To prepare the dip, sour cream and dry soup mix are combined together and allowed to stand overnight in the refrigerator. The dip is poured in a hollowed center of bread and some of it is served on the side.

 

Hawaiian Bread Recipe Variations

There are several variations to the basic Hawaiian bread recipe. Toasted coconut flakes, chopped pecan, ginger and vanilla are common additions to variants of the bread.

Hawaiian Bread-Rolls: These are made with eggs, butter, mashed potatoes, sugar, salt, flour and yeast. Pineapple juice, vanilla extract and ginger are also added as per some recipes. The ingredients are combined as per the ratio suggested by the Hawaiian rolls recipe, and the dough is allowed to rise after which it is given the form of rolls that are brushed with beaten eggs and sprinkled with sugar. The rolls are placed in foil round pans with transparent lids and baked till ready.

Hawaiian style bread is  used as an ingredient in different types of sandwiches and puddings. Here are some of the popular recipes suggesting use of such bread:

  • Hawaiian sandwiches: For preparing this, bread is cut in four layers. In the first layer, Swiss cheese and honey mustard are laid out, while the second contains smoked turkey and mayonnaise. The third layer has a filling of American cheese, bacon and honey mustard, while the fourth has roasted beef and mayonnaise. Butter and salt are added to this and the sandwich is wrapped in foil and heated for some time in the oven.
  • Hawaiian Pudding: The pudding is prepared by mixing together egg yolks, butter and sugar and mixing in milk slowly. Bread, vanilla, cinnamon, coconut and nutmeg are added to this, and the mixture is baked in an oven.
  • Hawaiian Appetizer: To prepare this, the top of the bread loaf is cut, and a hollow is made in the loaf. Into this hollow, a mixture of cream cheese, clams, tobacco sauce, garlic and salt is filled. The top loaf piece is placed back and the loaf is baked.
