Delaware food is basically southern US in nature, where agricultural foods are in great demand due to historical predominance of the state on agricultural production. Delaware, which is a state in United States, situated in mid Atlantic region’s Atlantic coast, is also famous for its seafood and meat based dishes.       

 

Cultural Influences on Delaware Cuisine

The cuisine of Delaware is inspired from the cuisine of various other cultures and countries, which include Scottish, French, British, Spanish, African American, Native American and Irish. The influence of southern cuisines like Lowcountry, Cajun, Creole, and Floiribbean is highly dominant in the cuisine of Delaware. Apart from the prevalence of southern cuisine in southern US states, a few elements have also been spread towards North, thus developing the cuisine of various northern US states.

 

Also, the South Eastern American-Indian tribes like Choctaw, Caddo, and Seminole had a great influence on the cuisine of Delaware and all over Southeastern US, where corn, tomatoes, and squash became immensely popular food items. The way of preparing food through deep-pit barbequing method was also inherited from these tribes.

 

Delaware food consisting of milk, flour, sugar and eggs (like cheeses and breads) were brought in by European settlers.

 

Tex-Mex cuisine is highly popular in then state which offers a blend of Native American and Mexican cuisines.

 

Creole and Cajun cuisines are French based, while Floribbean cuisine is Spanish based, with some influences from Caribbean cuisine.

 

Popular Recipes of Delaware Cuisine

  • Grilled walleye- this Delaware food item is prepared by grilling walleye fillets in a grill for a few minutes, seasoning them with pepper and salt, and thereafter topping them with pecan butter, which is prepared by combining together orange juice, butter, pecans and chives. The dish is then served hot after garnishing it with a few pieces of pecan.

 

  • Dilly Crab Dip– this is one of the favorite delights of Delaware people, where the dip is prepared by stirring together salad dressing or mayonnaise, sour cream, flaked crabmeat, onion, dill weed, lime peel, hot pepper sauce, lime juice, and red pepper, which is refrigerated for a few hours, sprinkled with already reserved crabmeat flakes, garnished with dill sprig and served with vegetable dippers.

 

  • Sicilian Risotto with Crabmeat and Basil– this is a Delaware food item which is highly filling and delicious, where chicken stock is cooked with rice and sautéed onions, whipping cream is added along with goat cheese, crab meat and finely chopped basil. The prepared risotto is then seasoned with pepper, salt and pecorino and then served.
