Spiced Apple Charlotte

|Brown breadcrumbs||2 Cup (32 tbs)|
|Brown bread slices||4|
|Mixed spice/Cinnamon||1⁄2 Teaspoon|
|Brown sugar||2 Tablespoon|
|Grated lemon rind||1 Teaspoon|
Butter a baking dish and line with fingers of buttered brown bread, with the buttered side downwards.
Put a layer of apple at the bottom of dish, sprinkle with sugar, lemon rind, crumbs and a little spice.
Repeat the layers until the dish is full and all these ingre- dients have been used.
Dissolve syrup in a cup over hot water and pour on top of the mixture.
Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes in a hot oven.
To serve: Invert onto a hot platter and serve with hot custard or pouring cream.
