Grease a round souffle dish and line it with the finely cut white buttered bread.
Be lavish with the butter! Peel and core the apples.
Slice them finely and put a layer of apples, then sugar, then bread and butter, repeating the process until the dish is full.
Finish with a layer of bread and butter.
Cover with greased paper and bake in a slowish oven for 45 minutes.
Sprinkle well with sugar before bringing to the table.
This should really turn out successfully, but if you are too timid to risk it then serve it in the dish in which it was cooked.
It will taste just as good.
